About This Work

"The Square of Mercury is 260" is from a series of paintings depicting keystone moments in the history of the Roman Empire. This square references the founding of the Gallic Empire by the Emperor Postumus in 260 AD. Created in a mixed-media of charcoal drawing and acrylic paint, this painting uses geometry, history and bright bold colors to tell a story that is deep and rich yet the piece can also stand alone as a beautiful wall decoration in your space. About Magic Squares: These squares harken back to an ancient mathematics concept of Magic Number Squares. The squares were comprised of rows and columns of numbers that when any row or column is added, the total equals the same total of any other row or column. The Chinese first developed these Magic Squares in 650 BC but perhaps the first "famous" Magic Square was Albrecht Durer's "Melancholia I" which featured a 4 x 4 square. This painting utilizes an 8 x 8 square whose constant total is "260".
