Mission San Juan Capistrano The iron bells sleep, and the trickling fountain softly murmurs prayers. The gilded church sits in the desert, an oasis of spiritual liqueur. It is a Mission where the atmosphere is composed of serenity, and the air smells green. The tranquility of the garden tempers civilized tendencies in visitors. This place must incarnate the meditative and artistic facets of the divine Mind. Floral creativity sings in the breeze the glory of God's perishable art. There is a stream of clear water which whispers to you as you pass it by. A pond is still, whose black water hosts stamps of lily pads. I sense Shakespeare's jealousy here, that poet whose skeleton was decorated like a Christmas tree! (Not with organs, for his soul was adorned.) From a considerable distance, one sees land wearing a flowery dress. The native spirits of Indians fertilize the wind with primitive magic. The hummingbirds are out of control, driven by anarchic bliss. They'll never know famine, but only sweet juices. The trees shake their hair like Spanish feminists. Mass is celebrated outdoors. The garden is gentle, yet its strong arm subjugates all worries. Stress evaporates, and nerves exhale, resting.
