Recently, I went to a friend’s new home and I was immediately greeted by a gorgeous painting of pointe shoes. The artwork was beautiful, and as an ex-ballerina, it fit her perfectly and added a personal touch to a barren wall in her home. I complimented the piece right away, and was shocked when she sheepishly replied, “Oh, I don’t know anything about art, this is just what I liked.” This got me thinking about how many people refrain from buying art simply because they don’t think they know much about it. I’m here to stand up against that way of thinking!
The truth is that art, like many things, is subjective. Sure, some pieces might demonstrate stellar technique or show a compelling display of emotion, but for the most part, what people enjoy is a matter of opinion.
In the case of my friend, she didn’t choose the most intellectual or abstract piece of art, she picked something that spoke to her and fit her personality. This added up to a breathtaking and personal addition to her space.
So many times we feel compelled to have a deep emotional attachment to our art, whether it’s a painting or a new tattoo. However, it is perfectly fine to select something that you just simply like.
This could be a painting or photograph of a baseball field that reminds you of your own days pitching in high school, or a particular watercolor with a shade of purple you simply adore. Sure, these may not be deeply intellectual reasons to choose a painting, but you don’t need to have a degree in Art History to select a painting that you enjoy.
Look for art that makes you happy, not some idea of what art is “supposed” to be. Like life itself, art is full of imperfections. In our lives, we are often under an immense amount of pressure, which is why choosing a painting that you like, even on the surface level, is so powerful. By choosing to adorn your space with something you are drawn to, it’s a little statement that is sure to boost your spirits every time you see it. It’s an investment in your own personal joy.
