It’s rare that someone would have two birthdays, but in the case of Marilyn Monroe, this anomaly just might be true. On June 1, 1926, a little girl named Norma Jean Mortenson was born at Los Angeles County Hospital. Her name may not ring a bell, but the name Marilyn Monroe might. On August 26, 1946, Norma Jean Mortenson signed her first studio contract with Twentieth Century Fox and changed her name to Marilyn Monroe – after actress Marilyn Miller and her mother’s maiden name. That day was when the girl we now know as Marilyn Monroe was born. In honor of Marilyn’s second birthday, we’re taking a look at some original artworks she inspired.
Perhaps the most famous painting of Marilyn was by a little known artist by the name of Andy Warhol. Though an indie favorite at the time of the painting, his orange portrait of Marilyn Monroe eventually sold at Sotheby’s for $17.4 million.
According to Artsy, Monroe herself was an art collector and she especially loved original art. Even though she could afford expensive pieces, she usually bought art that spoke to her rather than the masters. She once bought a copy of a Rodin sculpture and a Poucette painting from a gallery in Beverly Hills for $962. Marilyn collected original art work that she loved.
Warhol may be the most famous artist who painted Marilyn, but he’s hardly the first. From dreamy collages to splatter masterpieces, you can find a beautiful original portrait of Marilyn Monroe in almost any style and budget.
