I ran across an intriguing compilation of unique hotels on Apartment Therapy recently. For those of you art lovers traveling abroad this summer, one of these hotels may be just right for you. These atypical lodging options offer utterly unique spaces in environments you just can’t find anywhere else. From artwork to ice sculpture – here’s a great way to expose yourself to art and get a good night sleep at the same time.
Hotel Fox, Room 215
Artists from the fields of graphic design, urban art and illustration turned Hotel Fox in central Copenhagen, into an exciting and creative lifestyle hotel. Each room is an individual piece of art – from wacky comical styles to strict graphic design, from fantastic street art and Japanese Manga to simply spaced out fantasies. You will find flowers, fairytales, friendly monsters, dreaming creatures, secrets vaults and more.
Treehotel Mirrorcube
Philosophy: “Why not create a comfortable, well designed hotel which allows visitors to live in harmony with nature amongst the trees?” With the help of a group of well known designers and architects, Treehotel has a group of unique rooms created in harmony with nature, and ecological values. “Dig where you stand” as the saying goes. Inspiration came from the documentary film “Trädälskaren” (
Treelover) by Jonas Selberg Augustsen. It is the story of three men from the urban environment who look to get back to their roots by building a tree house together.
Arte Luise Kunsthotel
This hotel in Berlin is often called a “gallery where you can spend the night”. A hotel for art enthusiasts, a hotel for individualists, a hotel for people who love the experience of something different.
Dasparkhotel, Austria
Dasparkhotel, Austria
“Dasparkhotel is constructed from repurposed, incredibly robust drain pipes. The external simplicity surrounds an unexpectedly comfortable interior – full headroom, double bed, storage, light, power, woolly blanket and light cotton sleeping bag. All other hotelery devices (toilets, showers, minibar, cafe, etc) are supplied by the surrounding public space. Because sanitation, breakfast and other hotel facilities are obtained from existing public infrastructure, it is possible for Dasparkhotel to work with the very simple, user-friendly “pay as you wish” system. A night in dasparkhotel costs just as much as you can afford or want to pay.”
These last two aren’t art based hotels, per se, but are woks of art in themselves. They are the places most of us have only seen in magazines. So far, I’ve only come across one couple who’s actually stayed in one of these concept hotels – The Ice Hotel. If you’re looking for a gift for the person who has everything, even walls full of fabulous original art from your favorite on-line marketplace (wink), a night here may be just the thing you’re looking for…
Poseiden, Fiji
The world’s first seafloor resort and the only place where you can spend the night 40 feet underwater in incomparable luxury.
Poseidon, Fiji
Hotel de Glace, Canada
With a new theme and the new architectural plan built each year, this hotel is made entirely of ice and snow.
Hotel de Glace, Canada
Let us know if you have first hand experience at a hotel like the ones seen in this post. We’d love to hear your stories!
