Greetings from balmy Miami. 73 degrees today!
Aqua Hotel atrium
I went to the opening night gala at Aqua last night. Aqua Art Miami is one of Art Basel’s major satellite fairs and features contemporary art. This year Aqua returns to its roots at the Aqua Hotel where it was first launched in 2005. The back drop of an older hotel makes for an interesting art venue, very different from the huge halls of the Miami Convention Center where Art Basel is held. At Aqua, the artwork is displayed inside hotel rooms and is tucked into closets and bathroom space too.

Based in Seattle, Aqua’s organizers have made it their mission to promote innovative programming from the west coast as well as the greater USA and abroad, with a particular interest in young dealers and galleries with strong emerging artist programs. A number of new dealers have made their debut at Aqua, as well as other exhibitors and artists who have never shown at an art fair before.

Leaving Aqua, I passed by the entrance to a party at the Raleigh Hotel where LCD Sound System was playing. It was so exclusive that even the VIPs were turned away. The likes of famous art advisor/new Director of MoCA L.A. Jeffrey Deitch and other hot shots were there.
Moving along now. Stay tuned for more updates from Miami…
