Here are a few quirky things going on in your neck of the woods this Halloween season. Some are all about the art, some have a spooky twist. Either way, get out this fall and feel the spirit. Costumes not required.
Atlanta: High Museum of Art
Dali: The Late Work – Possibly the best part of this exhibit will be “Dali-Ween” (Oct. 31) where kids listen to spooky stories and craft fantastical Dalí-esque masks, and The Mustache Party (Nov. 5) where adults show off real (or fake) ‘staches while enjoying live musical performances by Lyonnais, and DJ Heart Disease, cold beer, video projection by Bean Worley and a mustache contest. Sign me up! Exhibit thru January 9
Baltimore – The Baltimore Museum of Art
Andy Warhol: The Last Decade – Andy Warhol said, “I never wanted to be a painter; I wanted to be a tap dancer.” I wonder if he ever dressed up as a tap dancer for Halloween? If you haven’t seen enough of Warhol’s iconic work in person, this would be a great show to see. Thru January 9
Columbus, OH – Columbus Museum of Art
Currents: Complaints Choir
One day, artists Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen thought about how often people complain. In the Finnish vocabulary there is an expression “Valituskuoro”. It means “complaints choir” and it is used to describe situations where a lot of people are complaining simultaneously. They had an idea. What if they put together an actual choir and had people sing their complaints? If dressing up in costume really annoys you, this is your exhibit. Thru January 16
Indianapolis – The Art Center
11th annual Day of the Dead Altar Exhibition and Celebration – Skeletons, beads, bright colors, and margaritas? What more could you want from a weekend? Oct. 30th 3pm to 8pm
Miami – Harold Golen Gallery
Guests of The Haunted Mansion – Featuring art inspired by the Haunted Mansion attractions at Walt Disney World and the various Disneylands. I love it already. Thru November 6
Nashville – Frist Center for the Visual Arts & Cheekwood
Chihuly, Chihuly Everywhere! – If you are not yet familiar with this extraordinary and wildly popular glass artist, see one of these shows. Not knowing Chihuly is like not knowing Harry Potter. But don’t worry, there’s still time. Cheekwood thru Oct. 31. Frist thru January 23
New Orleans – Voodoo Fest
MGMT + Hot Chip + Interpol + The Crystal Method + Kaskade + Rebirth + Soul Rebels = Hard To Resist
October 29, 30, 31
New York – MoMA
Abstract Expressionist New York – Quite possibly my very favorite art movement. In costume or otherwise, run, don’t walk to this exhibit. Thru April 25, 2011
North Carolina Museum of Art
East Building Grand Re-Opening on November 7 – Exhibits include: “American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell”, “Bob Trotman: Inverted Utopias”, and “Fins and Feathers: Original Children’s Book Illustrations from the Eric Carle Museum of Children’s Book Art”. They had me with the upside down people.
Sacramento – Crocker Art Museum
Wayne Thiebaud: Homecoming – How can you not smile from ear to ear when you see work by this artist? He is one of my favorites. Thru November 28
Washington, DC – National Gallery of Art
In the Tower: Mark Rothko – This show offers a rare look at the black-on-black paintings that Rothko made in 1964 in connection with his work on a chapel for the Menil Collection in Houston. A recording of the haunting music originally composed for that space accompanies the exhibition. Apropos of the holiday, don’t you think? Thru January 2
