Artist Statement:
In my work I attempt to depict not objective reality but rather the subjective emotions and responses that my surroundings or subject arouse in me.
My painting is inspired directly by my surroundings, I like to make very fast line sketches to capture a moment in time… in the way you might take a quick photo. This allows me to map my composition but still lets me portray the energy and life of my subject.
For me it’s very important to achieve a sense of movement and change within my works, as I feel this helps to illustrate my main response to landscape, which is a wonder and joy at the power and essence of nature.
In Particular I found myself repeatedly drawn to trees - I almost see them as guardians and witnesses to history … a strong presence in the landscape and the force and power of the wind, which shapes the land and is ever changing.
For me paint and the act of painting…creating a world or story on a canvas that can live and grow both in my head or the viewer’s imagination is the magic and purpose of my work. A painting should suggest/conjure up a whole world of possibilities that can make each viewing a new experience.
