I came across a post on thecoolhunter.com recently talking about how we love art of all kinds – temporary installations, art happenings and exhibits, and large-scale sculpture in urban spaces. But according to the article, the people want more.

Thecoolhunter.com says, ” We are on a quest for truly transformed urban spaces. We are looking for instances where a council, city, town, municipality has taken the initiative, come up with the funds and actually transformed a mediocre, unused, ugly space into an inviting and fun public environment.”

For example, the website lists The High Line in New York and the seaside promenade at Paseo Marítimo de la Playa Poniente in Benidorm, Spain as two incredible examples of the urban landscape transformed.

There is also Superkilen Urban Park in Copenhagen where the designers and planners invaded the entire available space to create a lively expression of the various cultures and backgrounds represented by the area’s residents.

Back at the beach, don’t forget the world’s longest 324 meter-long meandering bench by Studio Weave on the seafront at Littlehampton in the UK. It is not just a bench, it is an experience and an environment.

I love seeing and experiencing art coming into our lives all around us in creative ways like this. Why limit art to museums, text books, gallery walls or our own walls at home? The opportunities to incorporate art into our environments is endless. Let’s support these ideas so more and more cool and artistic urban spaces come to fruition. We just cannot have too much art in our lives!
